More than a scrapbooking printer
By Lori CraigI do not scrapbook very much at all, but I was intrigued by claims that this SureColor printer would print on a variety of mediums with varied thickness and texture, as well as many different size format options. The overview also indicated that it would print with an ink that was archival quality and water-resistant. It sounded like a great option for paper crafters, mixed-media artists.
I received this printer from Epson in December. I have printed on thick, textured canvas, 110# watercolor paper, professional quality print paper, thin kraft paper, traditional cardstock and regular office paper with very favorable results. In all of my testing and playing around, I only had one piece of paper stick in the printer creating a jam that was easily cleared by opening the back door and pulling the cardstock through. I have used the prints for cards, framed art, custom event favors for a stamping retreat, a printed canvas and many pieces of digital stamped art for watercolor and Copic. The ink quality has been beautiful, compatible and smudge resistant to both water and Copic Marker. You can see a variety of finished projects here in our Splitcoast gallery.
The setup of the printer was easy for me, and it quickly paired with my computer via wireless connection. I had never been able to successfully pair wirelessly with other printers, so that was rewarding. I was also able to easily print photos from my iPhone using AirPrint.
I did have some initial questions when I started changing the style or thickness of paper mediums. I was trying to set those mediums on both my computer and on the printer control panel. I learned that my computer automatically converses with the printer, and that I only needed to change the settings in my computer print dialogue box. I was over-doing it! After that, I had no issues.
I estimate that I've printed approximately 60 projects from black and white to several large full color photos in the last few months, and my ink cartridge measurements are just starting to indicate a slight dip in ink usage.
I'm happy with how this printer has performed for me over the last few months. It would be a real asset to any photographer, paper artist or crafty small business owner.

This is such an encouraging product review! I have been wanting a good printer to use for stamping. There is NO changing paper thickness with my HP and ink bleeds no matter how long I let dry. Thanks for the review!!!
Do you have an idea of the cost of ink compared to a printer that just takes standard ink? Is it anymore expensive? Also, how many cartridges are there for ink? Thanks.
Will it replace toner for using the Minc (sp)and foil?

Jann - There are 8 or 9 cartridges, depending on the printer model. You wouldn’t replace all of them at the same time, the display on the front of the printer shows you a monitored ink usage per color. On the Epson site - linked on the banner ad to the right side of the review page - the ink cartridges were $31-32 each. Thanks for checking out the review.
Beverly - My knowledge of foil usage is very limited - one thing I haven’t gotten into yet, though I love the look!! If the foil process requires heat set, this printer will probably not work. It is not a heat set laser. Thank you for looking and asking questions. Have a great weekend!
How does the ink not smear if it isn’t a laser printer?? Do you have to wait a certain amount of time for it to dry??
Kim - Great question, and I didn’t test dry time specifically. I did print and color the Power Poppy image right away. I’ll print and color with this in mind and comment with specific timing info!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I have been searching like crazy for a wide format printer for a few years now, and after reading your review, I am SOLD! I going to buy the Epson Surecolor P600. I have read another review on the quality of inks when it comes to Copics and watercoloring (especially with my distress inks) and that person said the same thing. This is so awesome! There are so many cute and beautiful digital paper packs that I am so eager to purchase and print out myself! Thank you so much!!!
